The megacity Rises to Hazardous Smog Following Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "severe" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Several parts of Delhi recorded an air quality index above 500, which translates to 10x the recommended level established by the WHO.

In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1800, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable standards.

Firecracker Prohibition and Current Developments

Since 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the capital as colder weather begins.

Yet in recent months, the recently formed city leadership appealed to the judicial authority to seek a easing of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Court Verdict and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities approved the request, mandating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited periods throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was considerable disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Many air quality sensors throughout Delhi recorded air quality spiking around late evening to some of the worst readings recorded during the festival in at least recent memory.

Regional Effects

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on contaminants traveling from India following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the situation continuing to worsen.

Around Diwali, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been documented to spike to significantly exceeding the most severe levels ever documented in the Chinese city, which was formerly considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Various Contamination Factors

This crisis in the city is attributed to a combination of various sources including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, creating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air arrives.

Medical and Economic Impact

Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million people residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to various research.

This pollution results in high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can result in malignancies.

Environmental contamination is projected to be causing 10,000 untimely fatalities per year in Delhi.
