That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into a figure of animosity who endorses specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
